ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:

The Communications and Issues Management Specialist anticipates, identifies, researches and monitors emerging issues and trends with potential implications for Ontario Northland. This role is responsible for providing advice and making recommendations on matters related to communications and media relations and will write plans and news releases.

 

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads and coordinates the development of various types of communications materials including communications plans, briefing notes, news releases, and speaking notes on a variety of issues
  • Conducts detailed reviews and edits materials ensuring they are consistent, on-brand, clear, accurate and effective
  • Coordinates approvals with multiple stakeholders
  • Finds or creates opportunities to enhance company profile with external stakeholders and plans corporate events
  • Provides communication advise on emerging issues to the senior team and coordinates responses in the event of a crisis
  • A key liaison with external stakeholders providing information, approvals and status updates
  • Prepares responses to media inquiries and cultivates and maintains strong relationships with media outlets
  • Fact checks and ensures information is accurate

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • University degree or college diploma in journalism, public relations, or business administration
  • Experience in crisis communications or issues management
  • Natural storyteller with the ability to write clearly and concisely
  • High level of political acuity, judgment, and diplomacy, including the handling of confidential, sensitive subject matter
  • Ability to prioritize among competing demands and remain focused on key objectives
  • Strong analytical thinker, able to recognize and understand complex issues and their implications on image and reputation
  • Experienced with digital platforms and willing and able to quickly learn software applications
  • Ability to communicate in French an asset
