Bridges and Culverts
Maintaining and repairing bridges and culverts is a major part of keeping Ontario Northland’s railways safe and reliable.
Work on the bridges involves refacing concrete abutments and piers, replacing and/or repairing steel bearings, pedestals, and other steel substructure members. This can also include in-water work to chip and reface concrete and Ontario Northland ensures environmental policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to. Deck replacements, handrail installations and other track work is completed on the superstructure of the bridge.
To maintain and repair culverts, our team utilizes a variety of replacement techniques including open cut excavation, pipe ramming, tunneling, and slip-lining (reline existing culvert to extend life). This work is fundamental for proper water flow and track drainage to protect rail lines.
Environmental and Safety
From a safety perspective, regular inspections and maintenance of bridges and culverts are paramount. Our rigorous protocols ensure that these structures can withstand the demands of daily use and extreme weather conditions. This proactive approach helps prevent accidents and ensures the continuous, safe operation of our transportation network.
By incorporating sustainable practices, we reduce our carbon footprint and promote a greener future.

The environmental impact of well-maintained bridges and culverts cannot be overstated. These structures allow for the safe passage of waterways, preserving natural habitats and minimizing disruption to local ecosystems. Our team at Ontario Northland is dedicated to the upkeep and enhancement of bridges and culverts, focusing on both safety and sustainability.
By ensuring that our bridges and culverts are in top condition, we prevent erosion, reduce sedimentation, and protect water quality in the regions we serve.
