Track and Infrastructure Upgrades

Ontario Northland has completed several rail infrastructure projects to prepare for the return of the Northlander passenger train service. Each project helps to ensure passengers enjoy a safe and comfortable travel experience.

Joint Elimination

Joint elimination transforms railway travel by seamlessly connecting rail sections, effectively erasing the familiar bumps and rattles from your journey. This innovative approach not only minimizes wear and tear on both train equipment and the tracks themselves, but it also paves the way for a smoother, quieter experience for everyone onboard. The benefits extend beyond comfort, as improved fuel efficiency and lower operational costs.

Curve Adjustments

Curve adjustments play a crucial role in maintaining the Northlander’s signature stability and comfort. By expertly balancing the forces that act on trains as they navigate winding tracks, these enhancements allow the Northlander to glide confidently through curves with greater speed, all while ensuring passengers enjoy a safe and pleasant ride from start to finish.

Warning Systems and Crossings

Warning systems are structures installed where roads and railroad tracks meet. They alert pedestrians and drivers about approaching trains and are essential for keeping communities and workers safe. Upgrading warning systems along the corridor is an area of focus as we prepare for the return of the Northlander Passenger Rail service.

Other upgrades may include:

  • New signage
  • Improved sight lines
  • Installing an active warning system
  • Adding gates to an existing active warning system
  • Closing the crossing
